Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
