The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
